A Million-Dollar Bet on Cities’ Brightest Ideas
January 31, 2025
Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg speaks at What Works Cities annual summit. What Works Cities / Bloomberg Philanthropies
What if your city's next big idea got a million-dollar boost?
Bloomberg Philanthropies just launched its biggest Mayors Challenge yet, offering $1 million each to 25 cities worldwide for bold, problem-solving ideas. Fifty finalists will first get $50,000 and expert guidance at an Ideas Camp to refine their concepts—think smarter infrastructure, greener solutions, or game-changing public services.
The goal? To spark innovations that don’t just transform one city but set a global example.
I’ve always loved mayors for exactly this reason. Their ideas are actionable, but have the potential to inspire cities around the world.
What would you propose to change in your city?
